FAQ

This page answers common questions about African Wilderness Institute training, who our programmes are designed for, and how participation is assessed.

Is African Wilderness Institute an accredited training provider?

African Wilderness Institute focuses on advanced wilderness training and professional development. Our programmes are designed to deepen understanding, judgement, and field competence rather than replace entry-level or formally accredited guide training.

Who are AWI programmes designed for?

AWI programmes are designed for experienced practitioners and professionally motivated participants who engage with wilderness systems at a serious, operational, or analytical level.

Do I need to be a qualified field guide to attend?

Not necessarily. While many participants are qualified guides or professionals working in conservation or ecotourism environments, some programmes are suitable for academically or professionally qualified participants whose work or interests require a deeper understanding of wilderness systems. Each enquiry is reviewed to ensure appropriate fit.

Are AWI programmes suitable for beginners or casual visitors?

No. AWI training is not designed as an introduction to wildlife, guiding, or safari experiences. Participants are expected to engage with complex systems, field realities, and applied interpretation at a professional or serious analytical level.

What makes AWI training different from other guide training schools?

AWI focuses on integration rather than subject silos. Training emphasises how ecological, geological, climatic, and human systems interact, and how this understanding informs real-world decision-making, interpretation, and leadership in wilderness environments.

Where does AWI training take place?

Training locations vary by programme and are selected for their ecological, operational, or educational value. Programmes may take place in protected areas, wilderness regions, or other field-based environments relevant to the training focus.

How long are the programmes?

AWI’s flagship training programme is designed as a 7-day immersive experience, allowing sufficient time to develop systems-level understanding, field judgement, and integrated interpretation. In addition to this flagship format, programmes can be adapted or developed for shorter or longer durations — including 2, 3, 10, or 14 days — depending on participant context, learning objectives, and logistical constraints.

Do you offer customised or group-specific programmes?

Yes. AWI designs context-specific programmes for professional groups, academic institutions, and international participants. These can be adapted to time available and learning objectives while maintaining the same analytical and operational standard.

Do you offer topic-specific or specialist training?

Yes. AWI offers focused modules (e.g., tracking and trailing, fire ecology, animal health and disease, landscape interpretation) either as standalone sessions or incorporated into customised programmes.

Do I need a high level of physical fitness?

Participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable spending extended time outdoors. Some programmes involve walking, long days in the field, and exposure to environmental conditions typical of wilderness settings.

What do participants receive after completing a programme?

Participants receive confirmation of completion and, more importantly, a refined framework for understanding wilderness systems, improved interpretive depth, and practical insights that can be applied immediately in professional or serious field contexts.

How do I apply or request more information?
